James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar 3 takes a daring turn with a scene he calls his favorite, featuring Oona Chaplin and Stephen Lang. Discover why Cameron fought to keep this pivotal moment and how it shaped the casting of Chaplin as Varang.

James Cameron ’s Avatar franchise is known for its sweeping visuals and family- friendly storytelling, but the third installment is set to break new ground. In the upcoming film, Cameron spotlights a scene he considers the most compelling of the series, one that brings together Oona Chaplin’s Varang and Stephen Lang’s Quaritch in a charged, intimate encounter. The director describes this moment as a double seduction, highlighting Chaplin’s captivating performance.

Why Cameron Fought to Keep the Scene

Despite the film’s nearly 200-minute runtime, editors pushed to cut the length of this particular scene. Cameron, however, stood his ground.

I said: 'Guys, you’re about to become unemployed — put it back, every line,'

he recalled. For Cameron, the scene was essential, not just for its shock value, but for the way it deepened the relationship between Varang and Quaritch, moving beyond their tough exteriors.

Chaplin’s portrayal in this moment was so powerful that it secured her the role. Even so, she had her own reservations about her performance and considered asking Cameron for a reshoot.

I was like, 'I got to call Jim, ask him to reshoot it. It’s such an important scene, her whole origin story is in there. I really wanted to honor her trauma and the resilience of this character in a way that did that story justice. '

Cameron reassured her, showing her the finished scene and reaffirming it as his favorite.

The Power Dynamics at Play

What sets this scene apart isn’t just its intimacy, but the underlying tension and shifting power between the two characters. Both Varang and Quaritch enter the encounter with their own agendas, and the balance of control shifts back and forth as the scene unfolds. This psychological tug-of-war adds layers to their relationship and brings a new depth to the film.

Cameron praised Chaplin’s ability to navigate these complexities, noting that her fluidity in the role was what made her stand out among other contenders.

There are a lot of layers to what she’s doing there and the forces that are driving her, and Oona was able to move fluidly back and forth between those in a way that I wasn’t seeing with the others. I’m sure, in retrospect, I could have cast any of them. But my instinct is to always go with the actor that understands the character the best.

Looking Ahead
