It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 Will Dive Into 1935 With Familiar Faces
Andy Muschietti reveals that the next season of It: Welcome to Derry will explore 1935, introducing younger versions of key characters and new faces, set nearly three decades before the first season.
Fans of It: Welcome to Derry may have just wrapped up the first season, but the creative team already has a three-season arc mapped out—even though a second season hasn't officially been greenlit. Andy Muschietti, the show's creator, recently shared some intriguing hints about what viewers can expect if the series continues.
Setting the Stage in 1935
Muschietti confirmed that the next chapter is set in 1935, placing the story 27 years before the events of the first season.
"We can only say the stuff that's already known, like it's in 1935, 27 years before season 1 and it involves the massacre of the Bradley Gang from the books,"
he explained. The upcoming season will unfold during the Great Depression in Derry, focusing on both new characters and younger versions of familiar faces from the first season.
The Bradley Gang Massacre, a violent shootout involving the entire town, is a pivotal event from Stephen King's novel. Season one briefly referenced this moment when an old car tied to the massacre was discovered. The incident also appeared as a mural in Muschietti's film adaptations, seen when the Losers' Club tended to Ben Hanscom and again in the sequel.
Younger Versions and New Connections
Perhaps the most exciting reveal is that viewers will meet younger incarnations of some season one characters. This could include Rose, the expert on Pennywise and its vulnerabilities, as well as the parents of some new—or rather, older—members of the Losers' Club. Notably, it's now clear that Marge will eventually become Margaret Tozier, Richie Tozier's mother, adding a new layer to the show's interconnected storylines.
With these connections, the series promises to deepen its exploration of Derry's haunted past, weaving together the fates of characters across generations. The anticipation builds as fans wonder which familiar faces will return in their younger forms and how their stories will intersect with new arrivals.
Looking Ahead to Season 3
While a third season hasn't been officially announced, plans are already in place for another time jump. The story would move to 1908, 27 years before the events of season two, centering on the catastrophic Kitchener Ironworks explosion. This tragedy, which claimed the lives of 102 people—88 of them children—occurred during an Easter egg hunt and left a lasting mark on Derry's history. The first season referenced this event when Dick Hallorann witnessed the body of a headless child during the Black Spot fire.
Although the next season hasn't received a release date, the creative team is eager to bring it to audiences as soon as possible. For now, fans can only wait and speculate about the chilling stories and new mysteries that await in Derry's shadowy past.
