Is Grey's Anatomy About to Lose Another Character After [Spoiler] Breaks the Law?
Grey's Anatomy may not be done saying goodbye: the Thursday, March 26, episode teases another possible exit after a resident committed a crime, as Kwan, played by Harry Shum Jr., grows attached to a terminally ill father and his teenage son.
Grey's Anatomy just tossed another grenade into Grey Sloan. The Thursday, March 26 episode sets up what looks a lot like a potential exit — and yes, it involves a resident crossing a legal line in the OR.
Kwan did the unthinkable — and Bailey called it what it is
Harry Shum Jr.'s Kwan attached himself to a new case: a dad with terminal cancer and his teenage son. The hospital had an experimental gel on hand that could shrink the tumor, but the FDA would not approve it for this patient. When Chandra Wilson's Bailey finished a different part of the man's surgery and stepped away, Kwan went rogue and slipped the gel into the patient without her knowledge. He fessed up. Bailey did not sugarcoat it: secretly putting something into a patient mid-procedure, without consent and without the surgeon's sign-off, is a crime.
Where that leaves Kwan is murky, but the timing is... interesting. The show has already confirmed some big exits at season's end, and this latest move feels like setup for more turnover.
The exit drumbeat is getting louder
Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are both leaving when the season wraps. Raver, 57, had practically prepped fans for that outcome before the news broke, saying it's the job and she knows what it feels like to have a target on your back — she brought up her days playing Jack Bauer's girlfriend on 24 — but she tried to keep her head down and follow whatever story the writers threw at Teddy. For what it is worth, she has been Teddy since season 6, so this is not a small goodbye.
Budget reality is shaping the season
The show has been transparent about belt-tightening. Veteran cast members now have minimum guarantees of 14 episodes out of an 18-episode season, which means some familiar faces will sit out four installments by design. On top of that, after the shocking death of Monica (played by Natalie Morales), Caterina Scorsone's Amelia stepped away on a sabbatical. Off camera, it was reported her break would run until the end of 2025 as a cost-saving move — effectively double the typical four-episode absence others are taking.
"It's not as satisfying a story if people aren't upset when someone leaves."
That was showrunner Meg Marinis, talking to The Hollywood Reporter back in May 2025. She also noted industry-wide budget cuts have already forced cast reductions in the last two seasons and hinted that not everyone would be safe — while leaving the door open to change course if the writers room (and presumably the audience) makes a strong case.
So where does this leave the season?
- Kwan risks legal trouble and a potential exit after administering an unapproved gel without consent during surgery.
- Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are confirmed to depart at the end of the season; Raver has played Teddy since season 6.
- Following Monica's death, Amelia went on sabbatical; reports said Caterina Scorsone would be off the show until the end of 2025 for budget reasons.
- Veteran cast minimums were cut to 14 of 18 episodes per season, so expect strategic absences throughout.
Translation: the revolving door is very much spinning, and the show is leaning into the emotional fallout that comes with it. If Kwan walks because of that OR stunt, it would fit right in with the season's pattern — messy, provocative, and designed to get you yelling at the screen.
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC and streams the next day on Hulu.
