Bad news for Rex Splode diehards: those character-focused TV specials aren’t happening anytime soon. As Invincible hits the halfway mark of its spring return on Prime Video with Season 4, the co-creator explains why spinoffs are on ice.

Invincible die-hards crossing fingers for more one-off specials like Atom Eve, I get it. But for now, don’t hold your breath. Robert Kirkman just explained why those character-focused detours are basically off the table, at least for a while.

What Kirkman actually said

Talking to Collider, Invincible co-creator Robert Kirkman said the team is too slammed making the main show to spin up more standalone specials. The show is in the middle of its spring run on Prime Video with Season 4, and they’re already marching toward Season 5 on a yearly schedule. That pace comes with trade-offs.

"We are not doing a Rex Splode special."

He did clarify why Atom Eve happened in 2023: it was built to fill that brutal wait between Season 1 and Season 2. In his words, that gap was a pain point — as in, 'I hated that gap.' So they slotted Atom Eve into production first and dropped it while the rest of Season 2 was still being finished. Since then, the machine has been focused on getting full seasons out annually, which leaves no real window for extra projects. The team hears the fan requests, they’d love to try more down the line, but right now the schedule just doesn’t allow it.

What this means going forward

Kirkman is already pointing to Spring 2027 for Season 5, which tells you how mapped-out the pipeline is. That’s great for momentum — especially after Season 2’s stop-start rollout — but it also means there isn’t time to experiment with side stories. Yes, the comics are loaded with spinoff- friendly characters like Rex Splode and plenty of smaller hero arcs, but don’t expect those to get animated treatment anytime soon. And considering how some fans reacted to brand-new material added this season, the focus seems to be staying on pushing the main plot rather than pausing for extras.

  • No more specials on the immediate horizon ( including Rex Splode)
  • Atom Eve (2023) existed to bridge the long wait between Season 1 and 2
  • The team’s locked into an annual season rollout, which eats up all the bandwidth
  • Season 4 is midway through its spring run on Prime Video
  • Season 5 is currently aiming for Spring 2027

My take

I love a good character spotlight as much as anyone, but this is the sensible call. Annual seasons keep the show in the conversation and avoid the long silences that kill momentum. The flip side: fewer opportunities for those cool, self-contained detours. If they can keep the main seasons humming and find a gap later, great. Until then, expect Invincible to put all its energy into the core story and ship new seasons on time — which, honestly, is not a bad deal.
