According to Variety, on Tuesday, May 5, Bonham Carter, 59, exited the HBO series just one week into filming after creative differences with creator Mike White, 55. The sticking point, per the report: White wanted her character — a washed-up star chasing a comeback — played in a more boisterous register. That note apparently did not align with how Bonham Carter saw the role, and she walked.

Reps for both were asked for comment. Shortly after, the plan for her character was tossed entirely, and Laura Dern boarded the show in a different role written specifically for her — not a straight recast, which is telling. This is one of those behind-the-scenes pivots that sounds small on paper but is actually pretty significant: you do not often see a character scrapped after cameras are already rolling.

Season 4 is set on the French Riviera and will orbit the Cannes Film Festival, tracking two rival film teams as they jockey through the week — with all the chaos that brings for the White Lotus guests and the staff trying to keep up. Producer David Bernad has teased it as a full sweep of the festival’s highs and lows: the thrill, the ego bruises, and everything in between.

For the first time, the show will split its stay across multiple White Lotus properties: one grand hotel on the Promenade de la Croisette and another perched on a hilltop in Saint-Tropez. That shift alone should change the show’s vibe — two playgrounds, two power centers, twice the trouble.
