Inside Naomi Watts and Paul Anthony Kelly’s punishing shoot recreating the Kennedys’ final moments
Naomi Watts and Paul Anthony Kelly lay bare the chilling reality of recreating the final moments of Jackie Kennedy Onassis and JFK Jr. for FX’s record-breaking Love Story.
If you watched Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette and felt gutted by the hardest scenes, you are very much not alone. The actors who had to live inside those moments say they were just as shaken on set as we were on the couch — and it helps explain why the show has taken off the way it has.
The toughest days on set: 'spooky' for both leads
Naomi Watts recently walked through what it was like to film Jackie Kennedy Onassis's final moments for the series, and she did not sugarcoat it. On Entertainment Weekly's The Awardist podcast, she said the work got under her skin in a way that lingered. She and co-star Paul Anthony Kelly leaned on music and their own little pre-scene rituals to keep their heads straight, but Watts was clear: death scenes are not her favorite part of the job, even when the goal is honesty over melodrama.
"Slowly dying is more palatable than suddenly dying, I suppose. It's weird. It's definitely spooky, and there's no question, when you walk down that line of imagining what it would be like to leave behind the people you love, obviously you wanna make the moment as truthful as possible."
Kelly echoed the same vibe about shooting JFK Jr.'s last flight — the one that ended in the 1999 crash off Martha's Vineyard. Playing a man who does not know what is about to happen, while everyone around the camera crew knows exactly how history ends, created a strange split: the character lives in hope and habit; the set carries the weight of inevitability. He called it spooky too, and said the mood stayed heavy even after they wrapped those scenes.
Why the show is connecting
The series never ducks the hardest chapters — Jackie O's goodbye, the crash that killed John, Carolyn, and her sister Lauren Bessette — and that unflinching approach seems to be paying off. On streaming, it is FX's most-watched limited series to date and one of Hulu 's biggest drama hits. It is also sitting at a Certified Fresh 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, with a lot of praise for how intimate and un-sensational the storytelling feels.
The real-life arc, in brief
Underneath the headlines is a very '90s love story. John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette met in 1992, kept things relatively private, and got married in a secret ceremony four years later. The fame part never let up, though — the paparazzi and public scrutiny were relentless, and the pressure on their marriage was obvious. Everything ended in July 1999 when John, Carolyn, and Lauren died on the way to Martha's Vineyard.
Premiere, cast, and who plays who

- Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis

It is a stacked cast telling a story so famous you can recite the ending — which is exactly what made those final scenes so unnerving for the actors playing them.
