India, China now lead box office for Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tearing up the global box office — and two overseas powerhouses now stand as Tom Holland’s biggest strongholds.
In two of the world’s toughest markets for Hollywood imports, Spider- Man: Brand New Day is breaking through in a big way. In India, the Tom Holland sequel has already rewritten the record books, while in China it held the top spot again with an unusually strong second weekend — the kind of staying power most franchise movies struggle to find there.
It’s now the highest-grossing Hollywood release ever in India, passing Avatar: The Way of Water after just 11 days.
India sets a new mark
The film added $10.6 million over the weekend in India to hit $52.8 million to date, pushing it past James Cameron ’s Avatar: The Way of Water as the country’s all-time biggest Hollywood title. That’s a standout result in a market where non-Indian films usually take only a minority slice of the theatrical business.
Some of that heat showed up before opening: ticketing service BookMyShow reported 800,000 advance tickets sold, the biggest Hollywood pre-sale there since Deadpool & Wolverine bookings in 2023. The demand hasn’t cooled, suggesting Spider-Man’s blend of familiarity and local enthusiasm is carrying it well beyond opening-day rush.
China keeps the momentum
On the August 7–9 frame, Brand New Day stayed No. 1 in mainland China, pulling in about RMB196.6 million (roughly $28.9 million) in its second full weekend. That brought its China total to around $185.4 million at that point — already one of the film’s biggest international tallies.
Crucially, the movie didn’t just front-load; it held. That second-weekend strength points to play beyond Marvel diehards and into the wider theatrical crowd, which is where long legs — and very big numbers — come from in China.
- $1.67 billion worldwide to date
- India: weekend $10.6M, cumulative $52.8M; biggest Hollywood release ever there
- China: second-weekend RMB196.6M (about $28.9M), cumulative roughly $185.4M (with newer estimates at $186.7M)
With the global gross now at $1.67 billion and the international haul past the billion mark, India and China have become central chapters in Brand New Day’s box office story. More recent international estimates put the Chinese total even higher, at approximately $186.7 million.
