Inde Navarrette sets sights on iconic mutant role in Marvel’s X-Men reboot
Following a recent meeting with Marvel, Inde Navarrette has her eye on a dream part in the upcoming X-Men reboot — but which mutant is she angling for?
On Variety’s Up Next podcast, Inde Navarrette said she recently took a general meeting at Marvel Studios — and the conversation included filmmaker Jake Schreier. She added that she made sure to mention the role she’s eyeing in Marvel’s coming X-Men era: Mystique.
“I mean, Mystique has always been super cool,” she said.
Navarrette said the sit-down involved Schreier — the director of Marvel’s Thunderbolts — and, per her, he’s developing Marvel’s in-the-works X-Men movie. She praised his approach to superhero storytelling and told him she’s drawn to character-first takes on big franchises.
“It was character-driven, and the whole time I just couldn’t stop yapping about how much I appreciated what he did with Marvel,” she said during Variety’s Up Next podcast.
Her push for Mystique comes as her profile jumps off the success of the 2026 horror hit Obsession, where she played Nikki. That breakout turn has her taking meetings across town — including this one at Marvel — as she lines up what’s next.
Navarrette also said she grew up on the 2000s X-Men movies, which helped cement Mystique as a bucket-list character. The shapeshifting mutant has a long on-screen history, carried by two stars over nearly two decades.
Who’s played Mystique before
- Rebecca Romijn — X-Men (2000); X2: X-Men United (2003); X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
- Jennifer Lawrence — X-Men: First Class (2011); X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014); X-Men: Apocalypse (2016); Dark Phoenix (2019)
Marvel’s X-Men reboot is in development, and Navarrette hasn’t been cast in any role. For now, she’s made her preference clear — and she’s already taken that pitch straight to the people making the mutant future at Marvel.
