We just got the official word on Sam Neill’s cause of death, and there are a few new details about his final weeks that are worth knowing. The Jurassic Park icon died July 13 at 78, and yes, the tributes have been nonstop for good reason.
Cause of death, and what led up to it
Neill’s representative confirmed he died from pneumonia. The rep also clarified something a lot of fans have been tracking since his memoir: he had previously been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, but he went into remission after receiving CAR-T therapy, an advanced immunotherapy treatment.
"Prior to becoming sick, Sam had valiantly fought and beaten lymphoma through a new treatment called CAR-T therapy."
That phrasing is a little clunky, so to spell it out: his cancer was in remission thanks to CAR-T. The illness that ended his life was pneumonia.
Still working, still busy
Even with all of that, Neill wasn’t easing off. According to his rep, he knocked out four film projects back-to-back over the past year. On top of that, he kept hands-on with Two Paddocks, his winery in New Zealand, which he was famously proud of.
