The case in brief
Pike was 18 when, according to court and news accounts, she believed fellow Job Corps student Colleen Slemmer was interested in Pike’s boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp. In January 1995, Pike, Shipp, and another student lured Slemmer, 19, to a secluded spot on the University of Tennessee’s agricultural campus in Knoxville, where Slemmer was beaten and killed. The brutality of the attack and reported satanic imagery drew national attention.
Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy in 1996 and sentenced to death. She has remained on Tennessee’s death row for about 30 years, while her attorneys have highlighted her age at the time of the crime and a documented history of childhood abuse and trauma in efforts to commute her sentence to life in prison.

Pike, now 50, is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on September 30, 2026, at 10 a.m. CDT.
