Justin never lost his powers. In the 2012 series finale, Alex won the competition — but Professor Crumbs retired on the spot and named Justin the new headmaster of WizTech, a position that came with full wizard status attached. The sequel didn't restore his magic. He'd had it the entire time.
But wasn't he fired from WizTech?
He was — over something the premiere calls only "the unicorn incident," a mystery the first season gradually unpacks. David Henrie, who stars and executive-produces, told TVLine the vagueness was the point:
"What happened? What unicorn incident? Justin would never!"
The key detail: getting fired cost Justin the job, not the powers. Full wizard status, once granted, stayed. He then chose a mortal life on Staten Island — wife, two sons, no wand — and concealed his magic from his family entirely, until a young wizard named Billie showed up needing a teacher.
The rule the show skips
Here's the loose thread. The original series established that wizards give up their powers to marry mortals — Justin's own father, Jerry, did exactly that to marry Theresa, and the show treated it as settled law. Justin married Giada, a mortal, and kept everything.
The sequel never squares this; apparently hiding your powers from your wife satisfies the wizard bureaucracy where surrendering them used to be required. Fans noticed. The show did not elaborate.
Where it all landed
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place ran three seasons, from October 2024 to its four-part finale on August 4, 2026. By the end, the next generation — Justin's sons Roman and Milo, plus Billie — was pointed toward a family wizard competition of its own, winner unrevealed, with Henrie openly floating a movie to settle it. Justin, meanwhile, remains a full wizard on a technicality from 2012.
