The Chi has never been gentle with premieres, but the final season said hold my communion wine. Before anyone got a "previously on," season 8 opened at a funeral — and the man in the casket at the Church of the Living Water was Pastor Zeke.
Killed off-screen, which is somehow worse
Zeke (Daniel J. Watts) died between seasons, off-screen, which means viewers got no death scene, no last words, no goodbye — just a church full of mourners and a casket. The premiere, "The Coldest Winter Ever," lets his former assistant Charles deliver the eulogy while the pews buzz with gossip about the scandals that hit the news right around the time Zeke stopped breathing. Subtle, it is not.
The confirmation lands later in episode 1: Nuck did it. The man who'd been treating Zeke as his personal confession booth — committing crimes, confessing them, "donating" to the church, repeat — decided he couldn't risk his pastor sitting down with the FBI and reciting the whole playlist. So the spiritual advisor became a loose end.
After the service, Carolyn tearfully admits Zeke "talked too much about the wrong things."

The tragedy is the timing
Here's the knife-twist: Zeke died mid-redemption. When he arrived in season 6 he was a gleefully corrupt megachurch operator — money laundering, an affair he was leveraging for access, a working relationship with Douda. By season 7 he was actually trying: reconnecting with his family, handing responsibilities to Charles, making amends. The show killed him at the exact moment he'd become worth saving. Watts, who came up around church his whole life, always played that duality like it was autobiographical:
"I come from a family of teachers and preachers," Watts said.
What it detonates going forward
Zeke's widow is convinced Nuck killed him and says so to Papa, who agonizes and then passes the suspicion to Tiff — who is, inconveniently, still dating Nuck. So the murder nobody witnessed becomes the fuse burning through the entire final season. Rest in peace, Pastor. The tithes were never the problem. The confessions were.
