He Was Dewey on Malcolm in the Middle—Where Erik Per Sullivan Is Now After the Recast
Malcolm in the Middle is back on Disney+, but Dewey isn’t: Caleb Ellsworth-Clark replaces Erik Per Sullivan — so where did the former child star disappear to?
Yep, Malcolm in the Middle is coming back. Disney+ grabbed a four-episode revival, most of the original family is returning, and one big question got answered right away: Dewey is being recast. Here is what that means, what the new story is, and where the original Dewey, Erik Per Sullivan, actually went.
Who is back, who is new, and who is Dewey now
Variety says the role of Dewey is moving to actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark for this four-episode special. Everyone else you expect is set to show up: Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson, and Justin Berfield are all expected to reprise their characters. Disney also added a few new faces in key roles: Kiana Madeira, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, and Keeley Karsten.
- Frankie Muniz back as Malcolm
- Bryan Cranston back as Hal
- Jane Kaczmarek back as Lois
- Christopher Masterson back as Francis
- Justin Berfield back as Reese
- Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over as Dewey
- New additions: Kiana Madeira, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae, Keeley Karsten
The setup: Malcolm gets dragged home
Creator Linwood Boomer, who built the original series, is writing the revival. The plot centers on adult Malcolm and his daughter, who get pulled back into the Wilkerson chaos when Hal and Lois make it very clear they expect Malcolm at their 40th wedding anniversary party. So, yes, it is a family event as a narrative trap. Classic.
When the revival was first teased in December 2024, Cranston and Kaczmarek kept the tone exactly where you would hope it would be:
"25 years since we premiered Malcolm in the Middle. I’m so excited… that I may have peed just a little bit. What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again! We’re very, very excited about coming back together and seeing what this family has been up to."
Disney brass are pitching this as a return to the show’s scrappy, big-hearted energy. Translation: pranks, bickering, and that specific Wilkerson brand of mayhem, with Boomer steering so it still feels like Malcolm and not a cover band.
So where is the original Dewey?
Erik Per Sullivan was huge on Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 to 2006 and popped up in a handful of projects afterward — Come on Over, Arthur and the Invisibles, and Twelve — before stepping away. He officially retired from acting in 2010 and has skipped the reunion circuit ever since.
Jane Kaczmarek has given the clearest updates. In 2024, she said she respects that he simply decided the business was not for him. According to her, he is enrolled at a very prestigious American university studying Victorian literature. In April 2026, she told The Guardian he is deep into Dickens, thriving as a student, and — this part is kind of wild — he turned down serious money to come back. That tracks with everything we have seen from him post-series: quiet exit, no drama, no nostalgia tour.
The bottom line
Malcolm is returning as a tight, four-episode Disney+ special with Boomer writing and the original crew largely intact. Dewey is the lone recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark stepping in while Erik Per Sullivan stays retired and buried in Dickens instead of pratfalls. Honestly, good for him. And for the rest of us, it sounds like the show is aiming to feel like the same offbeat family we remember — just older, louder, and still capable of ruining a party in record time.
