HBO’s Long-Unavailable Classic Is Finally Streaming: Binge All 93 Episodes Right Now
Streaming sprawl is unearthing long-lost favorites, but Disney+’s splashy debut still skipped a surprising chunk of its classic catalog.
Here we go: one of the great HBO shows that somehow never made it to streaming finally did... and it landed somewhere no one had on their bingo card.
Tales From the Crypt is streaming for the first time, but not on HBO Max
Shudder just pulled off a small miracle. As of Friday, May 1, the service is the exclusive streaming home of HBO's horror anthology classic Tales From the Crypt. Yes, exclusive as in: you will not find it on HBO Max. If you want the Cryptkeeper, you have to go through Shudder.
There is a catch. Only Season 1 is up right now. New seasons will drop every Friday through the rest of May and June until the whole run is there. So Shudder has all seven seasons lined up, but they are pacing it out.
Why this is a big deal
Tales From the Crypt was a staple for HBO in the 90s, adapted from the 1950s EC Comics. Then it basically vanished unless you owned the DVDs. The reason: a long, messy knot of rights that kept it off streaming for years. The fact that Shudder untangled enough of that to make this happen is... surprising, in a good way.
How long will Shudder get to keep it? That is the open question. If the show explodes in popularity, it would not be shocking to see the license shift again, maybe even back toward HBO. For now, it is a big win for Shudder, especially after they irritated their own fanbase earlier this year by canceling The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Also a win for horror fans who have been waiting ages to watch this without digging up old discs.
What you are getting
This is an anthology, which means every episode is a new story with a fresh cast. If one does not work for you, jump to the next. Across 93 episodes and seven seasons, the parade of faces is wild, and the talent behind the camera is just as stacked. And, of course, John Kassir's unmistakable Cryptkeeper voice bookends every tale with the kinds of groaners that made him a phenomenon.
- Familiar faces on screen: Brad Dourif, Lance Henriksen, Malcolm McDowell, Tim Curry, Zelda Rubinstein, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Brad Pitt, Catherine O'Hara, Ewan McGregor, John Lithgow, Ke Huy Quan, Kirk Douglas, Michael J. Fox, Whoopi Goldberg
- Heavy hitters behind the camera: Robert Zemeckis, Tobe Hooper, William Friedkin, Richard Donner, Tom Holland, Mary Lambert, Fred Dekker
The Cryptkeeper was a full-on pop culture star
If you were not around for it, it is easy to forget how big this thing got. The series spun off two movies — Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (1995) and Tales from the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood (1996) — plus two records, including a Christmas album with the Cryptkeeper doing holiday standards. There was an animated Saturday morning series, Tales from the Cryptkeeper, that ran three seasons with the violence toned down, and even a kids game show, Secrets of the Cryptkeeper's Haunted House. Kassir did the voice across all of it.
After Tales From the Crypt wrapped, HBO tried to bottle that lightning again with the sci-fi anthology Perversions of Science. It lasted one season.
The bottom line
After years in rights limbo, Tales From the Crypt is finally easy to watch, just not where you expected. If you have been waiting to binge it for the first time (or revisit it without hunting for out-of-print discs), Shudder is your stop. Season 1 is up, more seasons hit every Friday through June, and the Cryptkeeper is back to cackle you into the weekend.
