Critics panned it, but viewers binged it anyway: HBO Max’s star-studded flagship now tops the service’s most-watched chart, a sharp reminder that bad buzz still sells.

HBO 's Euphoria is back, the reviews are rough, and none of that stopped everyone from watching anyway. If that sounds familiar, well... it is.

"All publicity is good publicity."

What the numbers say vs what people watched

  • Euphoria launched in 2019 and quickly became one of HBO's most-watched shows, thanks to its very frank approach to drugs, sex, nudity, and violence.
  • Rotten Tomatoes had season 1 at 80% with critics and season 2 at 78%.
  • Season 3 showed up with a steep drop: 42% from critics and 51% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • And yet, it still landed as HBO Max 's most-watched title the weekend it premiered.

Why the bad press did not slow it down

Part of this is simple curiosity. Season 3 took a long, bumpy road to the screen, and that saga became its own tabloid magnet. In the years since the show started, Jacob Elordi, Zendaya, and Sydney Sweeney all turned into A-list names, which only poured more gas on the rumor mill about delays, on-set tension, and who might be ready to move on. A lot of people showed up to see if the new season held together or fell apart.

The show has always courted controversy

Euphoria has been one of the most argued-about series of the last decade precisely because it pushes so hard: explicit sex and nudity, heavy drug use, and jolting violence, all centered on characters who are mostly in high school. From the jump, plenty of critics questioned how believable any of that was. So when season 3 arrived and felt messier to some reviewers, it made suspending disbelief even tougher, and the drop in entertainment value they saw made the flaws harder to forgive.

So what does that actually mean?

The critical slide is real, but the audience curiosity is louder for now. Season 3 getting dinged by reviewers did not stop people from pressing play. If anything, the off-screen drama and on-screen extremes worked in tandem again: the very things that turn some viewers off are the same things that keep Euphoria parked at the center of the conversation — and, at least on premiere weekend, at the top of HBO Max's chart.
