Grey's Anatomy Returns Sooner Than You Think: When New Episodes Air Before the Season Finale
Scalpels down—for now. Grey’s Anatomy returns April 30 on ABC with the penultimate episode of season 22, poised to crack open Miranda Bailey’s risky cover-up.
Yep, Grey's Anatomy is on pause again. Here is when it actually comes back, the mess waiting at Grey Sloan the second it does, and why the finale is shaping up to be a big goodbye for a couple of longtime docs.
When it returns
Grey's is back on ABC Thursday, April 30 at 10 p.m. ET. That episode is the second-to-last of season 22. The season finale lands a week later on May 7. If you are a next-day person, episodes stream on Hulu the following day.
Where we left off
The last episode ended with Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) secretly trying to cover for intern Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.), who went rogue and gave a patient an experimental treatment the FDA had already denied. Ben Warren (Jason Winston George) put the pieces together, and then Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) caught wind of the situation. Richard pulled Bailey into his office to warn her that an official investigation was coming, not realizing Kwan was the one who crossed the line. So, yes, there is a bomb quietly ticking in the attendings lounge.
Off-screen shake-ups
Meanwhile, two familiar faces are heading for the exits. Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver are leaving the show at the end of the season, with their individual storylines expected to wrap during the May 7 finale. The revolving door at Grey Sloan has been spinning for years, but losing both at once is still a big swing.
What the cast is teasing
Camilla Luddington (42), who plays Jo, has been previewing the finale and, unsurprisingly, the word is drama.
"There are so many cliffhangers, actually, in the finale. That's what we do."
She also says to expect a Station 19 crossover pop-in. When she says "Danielle is back with us," that is Danielle Savre, who plays Maya Bishop, making an appearance. For Jo specifically, Luddington hints the finale pushes her into a career crossroads with some big decisions to make.
As for all the cast turnover, Luddington admits she lobbies like the rest of us: she jokes that Jo "almost died" and just gave birth on screen, so maybe let the poor woman live a minute. She talks to the showrunner, pitches ideas, and still gets kept in the dark because, well, Grey Sloan is never safe.
She also gave a shoutout to the show's portrayal of motherhood, saying they do not gloss over how messy it can be. She even points to a mom juggling four kids and not always being OK as the kind of honest beat the show gets right. And yes, she appreciates the Team Jo faithful.

- Story setup: Bailey is covering for Kwan's FDA-denied experiment while Richard warns an investigation is incoming, unaware Kwan is the culprit.
