Funny Woman: What Is This Dramedy About & When Will Season 2 Be Released?
Missed The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? Its perfect replacement is already waiting for you.
2023 has been another worthy year for the TV series industry, with viewers choosing what to watch almost every month from intriguing premieres to the return of favorite projects. Not surprisingly, with such a density of releases, some series were left without the attention they deserved.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel may be over, but Midge's legacy lives on. In recent years, several similarly themed shows about women trying to prove themselves in the patriarchal society of the 1960s have hit television. But while you may have heard of Julia and Lessons is Chemistry, Funny Woman has probably passed you by.
What is Funny Woman About?
The action begins in the provincial town of Blackpool. Barbara wins a beauty pageant and goes straight from the ceremony to London. Her beloved single father is left at home, and she has ambitious dreams of working in television.
Barbara is a huge fan of TV star Lucille Ball, but she has to start somewhere. So the woman ends up in the hat department of a big box store, where she befriends Marjorie. Through a chain of coincidences, Barbara meets an acting agent, Brian.
After a series of unsuccessful auditions, Barbara, who has adopted the pseudonym Sophie Straw, lands on the set of the comedy show Barbara and Jim. Producer Dennis not only sees a future star in the woman, but also falls head over heels in love with her.
Funny Woman is Gemma Arterton's Finest Hour
Gemma Arterton, who plays Barbara, is an actress with an amazing career. Her first starring role was Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, but the actress immediately realized that despite her stunning looks, she was not ready to be a sidekick to the main character (even if it was James Bond).
Her finest hour was Tamara Drewe, directed by Stephen Frears, who was the first to see Arterton's comedic potential. Funny Woman is Gemma's new triumph, in which she happened to invest a completely sincere, it seems, personal emotion.
Funny Woman Season 2 Release date & Streaming Platform
Thanks in large part to Gemma Arterton's performance, Funny Woman has been renewed for a second season, premiering September 6.
The six-episode first season is available to watch on PBS, Apple TV and Prime Video.
