The setup (quick and dirty)
Alison DiLaurentis disappears, her best friends spiral, and an unknown bully calling themselves "A" starts threatening to air out their worst secrets. The show, based on Sara Shepard's books, chucks the girls into one mess after another: murders, blackmail, exes with baggage, sometimes all in the same episode. Subtle? Absolutely not. Entertaining? Constantly.

So, yes, the fictional town of Rosewood put them through it, but real life has been busy too.
