From extra to The White Lotus: Walton Goggins looks back at his Hollywood climb
Returning to the idea of meeting God, Matthew McConaughey arrived at a curveball realization that rewired how he thinks about gratitude and life.
In a new chat with Extra’s Paul Costabile on October 22, Walton Goggins went back to the very beginning — the Georgia sets where, at 15, he learned to blend into a crowd and study how movies get made. Long before Boyd Crowder, the Ghoul, or Rick Hatchett, he was clocking time in the background and soaking it all in.
“I was an extra.”
The Alabama-born actor, who grew up in Georgia, said local shoots were his on-ramp, with early appearances in Murder in Mississippi and In the Heat of the Night. At 19, he took a shot on Los Angeles with roughly $300 in his pocket, found a job at a health club, then spun up a valet parking business to keep the lights on while he chased roles.
Between parking cars and auditions, he studied acting, worked on his accent, and grabbed any opportunity that inched him closer to speaking parts — a long road that eventually led to Justified, Fallout , and a stop at the White Lotus as Rick Hatchett.
White Lotus heads to Cannes

As for Goggins, he isn’t confirmed for Season 4. He told Extra he knows several cast members — including Messina — but said he doesn’t have inside intel on the plot. HBO hasn’t announced a premiere date yet.
