Prime Video is taking flight: Amazon has greenlit a Fourth Wing series, unveiled by Michael B. Jordan at the May 2026 upfronts, with the star set to executive produce the adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ best-selling romantasy.

Prime Video is officially diving into dragons and drama. Rebecca Yarros' megaseller Fourth Wing is getting the series treatment, and yes, the people making it know exactly how big this fandom is.

The who and the how

Amazon announced the greenlight during its May 2026 upfronts, with Michael B. Jordan on stage to break the news. He is on board as an executive producer. Meredith Averill is serving as showrunner, and the project is coming together with a pretty stacked bench: Kilter, Outlier Society, and Premeditated are all in the mix. Yarros herself is also executive producing, which should calm at least a few nerves.

'Violet's journey in Fourth Wing has sparked a global phenomenon, captivating millions of readers and building an intensely passionate fanbase around its world, characters, and emotional stakes,' said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. 'Rebecca Yarros' brilliant series is one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world, and with Meredith and our valued partners at Kilter, Outlier, and Premeditated, we're bringing it to life in a way that honors what fans love about the story.'

What Fourth Wing is about (no spoilers past book one)

The first Empyrean novel tracks Violet Sorrengail, who gets pushed into Basgiath War College to train as a dragon rider. She is the youngest daughter of General Lilith Sorrengail, and while her health leaves her underestimated, the war college does not exactly offer special treatment. Violet crosses paths with wingleader Xaden Riorson, who initially looks like her biggest problem. Over time, that rivalry turns into something much more complicated and, eventually, romantic.

Where the books stand

Fourth Wing is the opener in Yarros' Empyrean series. Three novels are out now: Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm. Two more are still to come.

Author and producer involvement

Yarros is an executive producer and, in her own words, thrilled to be working with a team that is passionate about both the books and the readers behind them.

Jordan is executive producing alongside Yarros and Averill, with his Outlier Society among the production partners. He put it pretty plainly in May 2026:

'This project required the right creative partner,' he said, adding that he and colleague Lisa Joy are 'building a cinematic world' with the goal 'to deliver the series this fandom deserves.'

Casting: not yet, but there is a plan

No cast announcements yet. Jordan told the BBC back in February 2026 that they are aiming for a mix of familiar faces and newcomers. The idea is to strike a balance so the casting feels right for the world without pulling you out of it.

  • Status: Greenlit for Prime Video, announced May 2026 at Amazon's upfronts
  • Showrunner: Meredith Averill
  • Executive producers: Michael B. Jordan, Rebecca Yarros, Meredith Averill (with Kilter, Outlier Society, and Premeditated aboard)
  • Story focus: Violet Sorrengail at Basgiath War College training to be a dragon rider; complicated chemistry with wingleader Xaden Riorson
  • Book series: Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Onyx Storm out now; two more planned
  • Casting: TBA; aiming for a blend of known names and fresh faces

Bottom line: the team knows the stakes. With Yarros in the room, Averill steering, and Jordan pushing for a big, lived-in fantasy world, this has all the pieces to make the leap from page to Prime. Now we wait for the dragons. And the cast. But mostly the dragons.
