Kelly's sacrifice The emotional centrepiece of the finale is Kelly Baldwin. Her research team on Titan discovers microbial cells in their surface samples — methane-based organisms, fundamentally different from anything on Earth. It 's the confirmation of extraterrestrial life, arguably the biggest scientific discovery in human history. But the celebration is short-lived. Their rover is damaged, and there isn't enough oxygen for all three crew members — Kelly, Walt, and Elena — to make it back to the Sojourner mothership. Kelly makes the decision to stay behind so her colleagues can survive and carry the discovery home. In her final moments, she ventures outside to place a commemorative plaque on Titan's surface. She walks into a lake of liquid methane, which glows with bioluminescence around her — a breathtaking, heartbreaking image suggesting the life they found may be far more complex than mere bacteria. The showrunners have confirmed: this is Kelly's end. She does not survive. Following Ed Baldwin's death from cancer earlier in the season (episode 3), Alex — Kelly's son and Ed's grandson — is now the last Baldwin standing. The Mars war The other major thread reaches its resolution as well. The conflict between Martian independence fighters and the M-6 coalition forces ends with a ceasefire, declared in favour of Mars. Miles Dale is sworn in as the first President of Mars. It's a hard-won victory, and the show treats it as a beginning rather than a triumph. The 2020 cliffhanger As is tradition with For All Mankind finales, the episode closes with a time jump. Set to The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights," the camera drifts through space — past Titan, through Saturn's rings — and arrives at a derelict spacecraft. It's Mars-94, the Russian ship that was abandoned after engine failure during the race to Mars back in season 3. The ship has been drifting in space for over 25 years. And then its computer switches on. A message in Russian appears on the display. That's it. That's the cliffhanger. The showrunners have been deliberately vague about what this means. The possibilities range from a remote reactivation by someone on Earth or Mars to something far stranger — and given that the show has just confirmed the existence of alien life, "far stranger" is very much on the table. What it means for season 6 Season 6 has been confirmed as the show's final season and will be set around 2020, bringing the alternate timeline roughly up to the present day. With Ed and Kelly both gone, the focus will likely shift to Alex Baldwin, Dev Ayesa, Aleida Rosales, Miles Dale, and whatever is happening aboard that mysteriously reawakened Soviet ship. The showrunners have hinted that characters like Danielle Poole may also return. One thing's for sure: For All Mankind has never been shy about raising the stakes with each passing decade. And a dead ship coming back to life in the void of space is about as high as those stakes get.
