Fired Star Wars Actor’s Return Teased Five Years After Controversial Disney Lawsuit
Five years after her high-profile firing, Gina Carano may be on the verge of a Star Wars comeback, with a new update hinting at the return of Cara Dune.
Well, this is a twist I did not have on my 2026 Star Wars bingo card: Gina Carano might be circling back to the galaxy that very loudly fired her five years ago. And yes, there are actual quotes and not just wishful thinking.
The short version
- Gina Carano played Cara Dune, an Alderaanian mercenary turned New Republic marshal, in The Mandalorian. She showed up in 7 episodes across the first two seasons.
- The character was written out off-screen as having been recruited to the New Republic Special Forces. Translation: the franchise quietly moved on.
- In February 2021, Lucasfilm cut ties with Carano after a run of social media posts the studio called "abhorrent and unacceptable."
- Carano filed a high-profile lawsuit in 2024, funded by Elon Musk. That case settled in 2025.
- Now Variety says the ice might be thawing. There is even a statement from Disney that sounds very much like an open door.
Yes, Disney actually said this
"With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future. "
That is a Disney representative, via Variety. No project named, no dates, but that is not the kind of sentence you put out if the answer is a hard no.
How we got from fired to 'maybe welcome back'
Back when The Mandalorian season 2 wrapped, Cara Dune got the TV equivalent of the Chuck Cunningham treatment — remember the older brother on Happy Days who vanished between scenes? Or Ross's son Ben on Friends, who essentially blinked out of existence after a while? Same vibe. In-universe, Dune was upgraded to Special Forces and then never seen again. Off-screen, Carano was out after the 2021 controversy, full stop.
The reversal started after her 2024 suit — bankrolled by Musk — wrapped up with a settlement in 2025. Post-settlement, Carano says she had a Zoom with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni and called it "really nice." She also recounted Favreau joking on the call: "So, where did we leave off?"
One note for clarity: Carano described Filoni as "taking over CEO of Star Wars" in that conversation. For the record, Filoni is the chief creative officer at Lucasfilm, not the CEO. The gist, though, is that he is steering the creative ship for Star Wars, which matters if anyone is greenlighting a Cara Dune return.
Where could Cara Dune actually fit?
This is the part where the timing gets tricky. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is almost here on the calendar, which likely makes it too late to shoehorn in a full Cara Dune comeback there — unless they already shot something under wraps or carve out a small appearance. Not impossible, just a long shot.
Before plans shifted to the movie, The Mandalorian season 4 was a thing in development, and Lucasfilm has been lining up a bigger crossover trajectory that tees up a Thrawn event film. That larger continuity is where a Dune return makes the most sense. If the franchise is rallying the New Republic side of the board against Thrawn, a Special Forces alum sliding back in is a clean fit, whether it's the lead-up to Filoni's movie or something after it.
There is also the Carson Teva factor. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee's X-wing pilot essentially took over the 'New Republic cop with a conscience' lane after Cara Dune exited. If Carano does come back, pairing Dune with Teva would be an easy narrative on-ramp.
So, is this real or just smoke?
We have: a lawsuit settled in 2025, Carano saying she spoke with Favreau and Filoni after that, and a new Disney line about exploring opportunities. That combo does not guarantee a Star Wars role, but it is a noticeable pivot from 2021. If those conversations happened right after the settlement, this could have been in motion as far back as last year — which is why a surprise cameo somewhere is not completely out of play.
Bottom line: No project named, but the door is cracked open, and the people who would actually make it happen have already talked to her. In Star Wars terms, that is what 'wheels are turning' looks like.
