Fire Country Slashes Episode Order Amid Showrunner Shake-Up and Cast Departures
Fire Country returns with a leaner season 5 as CBS trims the run to 13 episodes, down from 20, aligning it with reduced orders for NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney and Matlock.
Fire Country is coming back, just... leaner. Season 5 is trimmed, the cast has shifted, and the showrunner who teased what was next has already left. Here is where things stand before the trucks roll out again.
The quick version: what changed and why
- Season 5 is set for 13 episodes, down from the usual 20.
- It is not the only one: NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney, and Matlock are also getting smaller orders.
- Reason, per Deadline: CBS bulked up its scripted lineup for fall 2026, so episode counts got squeezed to make room.
Where the story is now
If you are new here: Fire Country launched in 2022 and kicked off with inmate Bode (Max Thieriot) trying to cut his sentence by joining the California Conservation Camp Program. By season 3, Bode was out of prison and working to prove himself at Cal Fire. That evolution is still the spine of the show.
The cast shuffle, explained
April 2025 brought a real-world shakeup: budget cuts led to the exits of Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila. Burke has not addressed his departure publicly. Arcila did speak about it at the time, and her take was very much about rolling with it:
'I had no idea ever. But at the same time, I know that this is the nature of the industry that I am in, and I have accepted the flow of release and acceptance throughout my journey and knowing that when one door closes, another one always opens... I believe that if we put resistance towards that, sometimes it stops us from fulfilling other things that we love.'
What the (now former) showrunner said about the new season
Back in October 2025, showrunner Tia Napolitano defended the churn and set expectations for how the show would move forward.
'It is a fire show. Anyone can go at any time.'
She also said we would see a steady stream of new and returning faces: people from Sharon's past alongside fresh characters designed to stir up conflict, secrets, twists, and turns.
The plan, as she described it then, was to 'really spice it up' while still honoring what the show had lost. Specifically: the season would 'thread the needle' of paying tribute to Vince, and acknowledge that Gabriella is gone but off living a happy, successful life. The theme Napolitano laid out was recovery — rising from the ashes, finding hope faster than you might expect, and watching everyone step up in honor of Vince and the sacrifice he made.
And then another change: Napolitano exited and will not be back for season 5. In January, she signed off with this:
'I am beyond proud of the past four seasons of Fire Country. All of my gratitude to our cast, crew, writers, producers, fans, and of course CBS and CBS Studios. It has been a beautiful ride!'
