Sixteen years after Family Guy’s acclaimed Star Wars trilogy, the show has dropped a new crossover, aiming to recapture the wild, fan-favorite chaos that made those specials classics.

Sixteen years after Family Guy last mashed up with Star Wars, they finally did it again... sort of. It is not a full-blown return to the epic parody days. This one is a short, winky promo built to hype 'Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu' hitting theaters on May 22. Manage expectations accordingly.

So what actually happens in the new crossover?

Hulu teased it first: the Mandalorian’s ship drops out of the sky and parks at the Griffin house. That tease had people wondering if we were getting a proper reunion tour. The finished spot makes it clear this is a quick crossover gag, not a feature-length roast.

Only Grogu shows up. No Din Djarin in sight. Stewie tries to use the Force and, naturally, Grogu handles it in about half a second like it is nothing. Peter wanders in at the end to try to swipe something from the little guy, because of course he does. It is a cute one-off, timed to the movie ’s release and all the cross-promo Disney has been rolling out lately.

Remember when Family Guy went all-in on Star Wars?

Back when these two weren’t even under the same corporate roof, Family Guy went deep with a full trilogy of specials adapting the original films. The set was called 'Laugh It Up, Fuzzball: The Family Guy Trilogy' and it riffed on 'A New Hope', 'The Empire Strikes Back', and 'Return of the Jedi' with that very specific Family Guy chaos that doubled as a surprisingly affectionate tribute. Those wrapped in 2010, and the show flat-out said they weren’t going to do the prequels.

Where this lands

This new crossover is fun, but it is nowhere near the scope or obsessively crafted riffing of those old specials. With Star Wars now swimming in TV shows and movies, there is obviously plenty left to parody, and now both brands live under Disney, which theoretically makes these team-ups easier. Still, a big, proper send-up feels unlikely anytime soon. If this promo is a breadcrumb for something more down the road, great. For now, take it for what it is: a quick Grogu drop-in to celebrate the movie’s May 22 release, a few good chuckles, and a reminder of how good Family Guy’s Star Wars era really was.
