Exes Reunite: Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson Celebrate Son Ryder’s College Graduation
Kate Hudson and ex Chris Robinson reunited in New York to cheer son Ryder’s college graduation, with the proud mom sharing a sweet Radio City Music Hall snap of her head on his shoulder as he beamed in a purple gown.
Kate Hudson and her ex, Chris Robinson, pressed pause on the past to celebrate something a lot bigger: their son Ryder just graduated college. The family did the big New York moment at Radio City Music Hall, because of course they did.
The Radio City snapshot
On Saturday, May 16, Hudson, 47, shared an Instagram Story from outside Radio City Music Hall in NYC. She’s smiling, leaning her head on Ryder’s shoulder. He’s in the full regalia — purple gown, black cap — with Robinson standing right next to him. Hudson topped the pic with three purple heart icons over Ryder’s head, leaning into the theme.
The family timeline, quick and clean
- Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson married in 2000, welcomed Ryder in 2004, and divorced in 2007. Robinson is the lead singer of The Black Crowes.
- Hudson was later briefly engaged to Matt Bellamy; they had son Bingham in 2011.
- She moved on with Danny Fujikawa; they welcomed daughter Rani in 2018 and got engaged three years later (2021).
- Robinson married Allison Bridges in 2009; they had daughter Cheyenne Genevieve that same year and split in 2018. He married Camille Johnson in 2020.
So what does Ryder want to do now?
Back in March, ahead of graduation, Robinson made a rare comment about Ryder’s next move while talking to Entertainment Tonight at the Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscars viewing party. He basically thinks his son is leaning more on the Hudson playbook than the Robinson one.
"He’s his own young man, so there’s that. Very proud of him. I imagine he’s going to lean a little more towards the handsome leading man time in his life and not so much the freaky, gratuitous, bohemian rock-and-roll part of his other family."
He also added that there’s a lot of life ahead for Ryder and he’s very proud — dad mode fully activated. If he’s right, start placing your bets on screen time over stage time.
Where Kate and Chris are now
In 2024 on The Howard Stern Show, Hudson unpacked how she sees that first marriage with some pretty clear-eyed honesty. She said it was a beautiful relationship with a lot of love, but she outgrew it and the breakup was rough. She was very young when her career took off, wanted to go in different directions, and they weren’t in the same place to keep going. She still calls Robinson brilliant and really funny, but notes his preference for a nomadic, artist life — which, as she put it, can be tough on relationships.
Bottom line: proud parents showed up, the blended family turned out, and Ryder got his cap-and-gown moment at Radio City. Now we wait to see if he pops up on a set or with a mic — and given Dad’s read, I’m watching the casting news.
