Emmy history made: Matthew Rhys notches a record
Matthew Rhys turned his 2026 Emmy Awards win into a history-making milestone — the kind that’ll have awards-watchers buzzing about exactly which record he just set.
First came Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie . Then, before the night was over, Matthew Rhys was back on stage for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his turn as small-town mayor Tom Loftis in Widow’s Bay on Apple TV+ . That one-two made him the first man ever to win two lead-acting Emmys in a single ceremony.
The double also completed a rare genre sweep. Rhys previously won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2018 for The Americans, making him the first performer to collect lead-acting Emmys across drama, comedy, and limited/anthology.

Widow’s Bay had a monster night of its own, emerging as one of the ceremony’s most-awarded shows with 14 wins. The haul topped last year’s 13-win benchmark set by The Studio, underscoring how completely the horror- comedy broke out this season.
“Her genius really does live in the recesses of her disturbed brain,” Rhys said, saluting showrunner Katie Dippold.
Acclaim for Widow’s Bay has reached beyond TV circles: filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and author Stephen King have both publicly praised the series, which blends eerie small-town mysteries with sharp, deadpan laughs.
Season 2 is coming
