Dwayne Johnson has built a career working with some of Hollywood ’s most magnetic personalities, from Emily Blunt to Gal Gadot and Karen Gillan. Yet, when asked about the first actor who truly captivated him, Johnson’s answer is as surprising as it is sincere.

During a recent interview with W Magazine, the former WWE superstar didn’t hesitate when asked about his earliest movie crush. Instead of naming a contemporary leading lady or a classic Hollywood icon, he pointed to Gene Wilder, the beloved actor who brought Willy Wonka to life in the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Gene Wilder’s Lasting Impact

Johnson explained that his admiration for Wilder began at a young age. He recalled being drawn to Wilder’s performances, especially after watching him alongside Richard Pryor in Stir Crazy. Johnson shared,

My cinematic crush would have been – I don't mean this in a weird way [chuckles] – I was just always so enamored with Gene Wilder. Interestingly enough, first, because I always loved Richard Pryor growing up. I loved Richard Pryor. I loved Elvis. I thought I was both when I was a kid. And then I watched Stir Crazy and there was something about Gene, and I was like, 'Wow.' And then when I saw Willy Wonka... I think Willy Wonka was the thing that really grabbed me about Gene Wilder. I think it was the tenderness in his soul. And I don't know if I was thinking that when I was 10 years old, but there was just something captivating.

A Childhood Connection

For Johnson, Wilder’s unique presence on screen went beyond just acting talent. He described feeling a deep connection to the warmth and gentleness Wilder brought to his roles. Even as a child, Johnson sensed there was something special about the way Wilder portrayed his characters, especially the whimsical and kind-hearted Willy Wonka.

Johnson’s story highlights how the magic of movies can leave a lasting impression, shaping the way we see the world and the people in it. His candid admission offers a glimpse into the softer side of a man known for his strength and charisma, revealing the power of a truly memorable performance.
