Doctor Doom vs. Thanos: How powerful he is in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel’s new Avengers: Doomsday tease hints at a proper shake‑up of the MCU pecking order — with long‑standing heavyweights suddenly looking like underdogs.
The latest footage doesn’t just show who’s behind the mask — it sets the ceiling on how dangerous this version of Doctor Doom really is. With Robert Downey Jr. stepping into Victor Von Doom, the movie positions him as a bigger existential threat than anything the MCU ’s heavy hitters have faced.
“They died facing enemies and threats that scared me far less than this one,” Thor says in the trailer.
Unlike Thanos , who needed all six Infinity Stones to hit god mode, this Doom is built different: the armor is a fusion of cutting-edge tech and actual sorcery, and the mind inside it is every bit as lethal. That blend is the big swing here — he’s not collecting power; he’s already carrying it.
Comics readers clocked the nod immediately. In Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić’s Secret Wars #8, Doom ends a standoff with Thanos in an instant by ripping the Titan’s skeleton out of his body. A Disney light show in Shanghai even flashed that skeleton silhouette as part of the Avengers: Doomsday rollout, and the new trailer has fans speculating the film might stage its own jaw-dropper in that vein.
The footage also teases an everyone-in-the-pool moment — Wakandans, the Fantastic Four , and the Fox-era X‑Men sharing the screen — as the Russos steer another all-hands MCU event toward that December finish line.
Big-screen plan
Disney is rolling out a new premium format called Infinity Vision, and Avengers: Doomsday is its first real test. To earn the label, theaters must meet specific specs:
- Minimum 50-foot-wide screen
- Laser projection
- Dolby 7.1 surround sound
Reports indicate more than 7,500 theaters have applied for certification, with roughly 5,500 screens expected to qualify worldwide. The push arrives as many IMAX screens are reportedly tied up by Warner Bros. ’ Dune: Part Three, which opens the same day, prompting at least one IMAX executive to reportedly dismiss Infinity Vision as “marketing.”
Curious viewers can try the format early: Avengers: Endgame Encore returns to theaters on September 25, 2026 with seven extra minutes, a new introduction from the Russo brothers, and an expanded ending designed to point straight into Doomsday.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
