Director explains the live-action Naruto movie’s trick to nailing the hero’s spirit
Destin Daniel Cretton outlined a grounded, character-driven approach to Lionsgate’s Naruto adaptation, focusing on Naruto Uzumaki’s journey rather than sprawling worldbuilding.
Speaking about the tone he wants to strike, director Destin Daniel Cretton said he’s zeroing in on the parts of Naruto that sting: the loneliness of a kid shunned by his own village and the weight of the beast sealed inside him. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the filmmaker — known for Marvel ’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings — framed the movie around Naruto’s struggle to turn that stigma into strength.
“Naruto’s trajectory, his feelings of being an outsider, the feeling of having an ugliness or a monster or some part of you that you’re ashamed of, and then coming to realize that’s the part that makes you unique, that gives you your power.”
That throughline has always grounded the franchise: behind the pranks and training arcs, Naruto is an orphan carrying the Nine-Tails and fighting to be seen. Cretton also said he feels a personal connection to the character, both culturally and emotionally, which is shaping his approach to the script.
Where the movie stands
A live-action take on Naruto was first announced in 2015 and hit plenty of stops and starts. It ’s now back on track with Cretton officially at the helm, and creator Masashi Kishimoto has publicly backed the choice, calling the development a “miracle.”
Production is moving ahead on the practical front, too: the team is actively casting the core roles. No casting has been announced and there’s no release date yet, but the search for leads is underway.
