Destin Daniel Cretton says real life sparked Spider-Man: Brand New Day

To nail those vertigo-inducing web-swing shots, director Destin Daniel Cretton says the team studied hours of first-person GoPro videos — from parkour runs on city rooftops to wingsuit dives off cliffs — looking for the exact angles that make your stomach drop. He told Rolling Stone they applied those findings on set with ultra-small cameras to put audiences right inside Spider- Man’s mask.

“Because of advancements like how small cameras can get these days, we were able to now look at YouTube footage of wingsuiters and parkour…and analyze what angles make your heart drop, that make you feel like you’re right there with them,” he said.

The approach fits the reset of Spider-Man: Brand New Day , the fourth Tom Holland movie, which picks up after the memory wipe of No Way Home. With the world — including MJ and Ned — not knowing who Peter is anymore, Cretton leaned into an up-close, subjective style meant to make every swing and free fall feel personal.

Tom Holland has been clear this chapter leans heavier on Peter’s inner life, not just the quips and acrobatics. He told Blavity that the story zeroes in on a kid trying to reconcile the mask with the person underneath, now cut off from the people who grounded him.

“When we were designing the character arc and putting the script together, it was really important for us to showcase to audiences that Peter Parker is in the darkest chapter of his life,” Holland said.

Cretton also said Holland’s stint on Christopher Nolan ’s The Odyssey pushed the actor to take bigger creative risks when he returned to Peter — even if it meant Brand New Day started later than planned. According to the director, the experience emboldened Holland to chase choices that feel unfamiliar for the character.

“When you really want something to feel fresh for an audience, we do have to take some swings that may be a little more out of the box. And I think that experience made him even more willing to take some of those swings,” he said.
