DC’s next animated event, Dynamic Duo, is on the way — here’s your quick guide to the buzz, first looks, and when to expect it.

When DC said 'Dynamic Duo' back in 2024, everyone assumed Batman and Robin. Nope. This one is a curveball from the new James Gunn- led DCU: an animated feature about two Robins, before either of them becomes the legend you know. It has popped up here and there with tiny updates, which only makes fans twitchier. So, here is everything that is actually out there, without the fluff.

So it is not Batman and Robin. Who is it?

Young Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. The movie zeroes in on their early days together, how they click and clash, and the different paths they take. If Gunn’s live-action 'The Brave and the Bold' is the father-son thing (Damian and Bruce), this is the messy big-brother/little-brother chapter of the Batfamily.

The pitch (and yes, it is darker than the title sounds)

At Annecy Festival 2026, the first concrete plot nugget landed. The movie follows Dick and Jason as kids on the streets who brand themselves the 'dynamic duo' before life yanks them in opposite directions: Dick eventually ends up under Batman’s wing, and Jason falls in with the Red Hood gang. You can see where that leads. Dick is destined to become Nightwing; Jason is on a collision course with Red Hood. Same orbit around Batman, totally different relationship with darkness.

'Follows Jason & Dick as a duo of street rats who name themselves the dynamic duo... The duo split up as Dick ends up joining Batman while Jason joins the Red Hood gang.'

Animation style: full-on puppetry

This is not another slick CG superhero cartoon. Warner Bros. showed off footage at CinemaCon 2025 that was created entirely with puppetry animation. No hybrid tricks, just handcrafted visuals and some striking, cinematic shots. Swaybox Studios is the outfit handling the animation, and they later put the clip online too. It is a bold choice for a DC feature and, frankly, a cool one.

First looks and design teases

Also at Annecy 2026, attendees got an early peek at Batman and the Red Hood gang’s leader as they will appear in the film. Think stylized designs that fit the puppet medium while still reading instantly as those characters. A very nerdy development detail, but it matters here because the medium is doing a lot of the storytelling.

Who is making it (and where it fits)

This sits inside the new DCU overseen by James Gunn, even though it is animated. It is not connected to Matt Reeves ’ 'The Batman' universe, but Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho is producing the film. That combination might sound odd on paper, but it is real. Timeline-wise, we still do not know if Dick or Jason will cameo in other DCU projects before this drops.

Cast, cameos, and the Bat-guest list

Voice cast is still under wraps. It would be weird if Batman/Bruce Wayne did not show up at some point, and Alfred feels like a lock as the mentor presence. Barbara Gordon is a maybe, given her history with Dick. None of that is confirmed yet, but those are the obvious chess pieces.

When can we see it?

DC has planted a flag on June 30, 2028. Yes, that is a wait. On the bright side, that is the kind of lead time you want for a handcrafted puppet-animated movie to actually sing on a big screen.

TL;DR: What we know right now

  • Title: Dynamic Duo (animated feature in the James Gunn DCU)
  • Focus: Young Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, their bond and split before Nightwing/Red Hood
  • Key plot beat from Annecy 2026: street-kid partners who call themselves the 'dynamic duo' until Dick joins Batman and Jason joins the Red Hood gang
  • Style: Made entirely with puppetry animation by Swaybox Studios; CinemaCon 2025 footage impressed
  • First looks: Batman and the Red Hood gang leader designs were shown at Annecy 2026
  • Release date: June 30, 2028
  • Production: Produced by Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho, but not tied to Reeves’ 'The Batman' universe
  • Cast: Not announced; Batman, Alfred, and possibly Barbara Gordon are plausible appearances
  • Big picture: Pairs with 'The Brave and the Bold' (Damian/Bruce) to widen the Batfamily story inside the DCU

If DC sticks the landing, this could be the Batfamily movie that actually feels different, not just in story but in how it looks and moves. Puppet-animated street-level Gotham is a swing. I am into the swing.
