David Corenswet never expected to land the Superman role, even mistaking his audition call for a different blockbuster. Now, with Superman’s box office success and a sequel on the way, he’s won over fans and critics alike.

When David Corenswet got the call to audition for Superman, he was so caught off guard that he assumed it was for a completely different movie. Standing on a ladder, changing a lightbulb, he answered his agent’s call and joked,

“Is it Top Gun 3? What am I waiting for?”

Corenswet shared this story with Jonathan Bailey during Variety’s actors on actors series, admitting,

“I really was not expecting it, although I think other people thought that I should be expecting it. Just statistically speaking, it feels completely impossible.”

Unexpected Casting and Fan Reactions

Corenswet’s casting as the iconic hero came as a surprise to many. Before landing the role, he was best known for smaller projects like Ti West’s horror prequel Pearl and Ryan Murphy’s The Politician. At the time, fans had their eyes on other actors, including Nicholas Hoult and Jacob Elordi, to take up the cape. Many were still hoping for Henry Cavill’s return, making Corenswet’s selection even more unexpected.

Despite initial skepticism, Corenswet quickly won over the DC community. Superman soared at the box office, pulling in over $616 million worldwide. With the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, already in the works, fans are eager to see what’s next. Early glimpses suggest Corenswet’s Superman will join forces with Hoult’s Lex Luthor to take on Braniac.

Behind the Scenes: Humility and Humor

During the interview, Corenswet and Bailey bonded over their shared theater backgrounds, their love of flying, and what it means to be “cool.” Corenswet confessed he never saw himself as particularly cool, even telling director James Gunn before accepting the part,

“If you wanted somebody cool, you should have hired somebody else.”

Gunn’s response?

“Oh, believe me. I know.”

Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. For those looking to catch up on the DCU, there’s plenty to explore, from watching the movies in order to keeping tabs on upcoming releases.
