Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Film Delayed, Skeleton Crew Heroes Would Return
Dave Filoni’s highly anticipated Star Wars movie is on pause, but it was set to unite characters from Skeleton Crew, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka in a battle against Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Plans for Dave Filoni’s next Star Wars adventure have hit a standstill, leaving fans waiting for what was shaping up to be a major crossover event. The project, first revealed at Star Wars Celebration in 2023, was expected to bring together beloved characters from several recent series, including the 2024 debut Skeleton Crew. While the film remains untitled and its release date uncertain, details have emerged about its ambitious scope and the heroes it would have united.
Filoni’s vision was to assemble figures from Skeleton Crew alongside familiar faces from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. Together, they would have faced off against the formidable Grand Admiral Thrawn, a villain whose presence has loomed large in recent Star Wars storytelling. The movie was set to take place in the timeline between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, a period rich with untold stories and shifting alliances.
Filoni’s Creative Process and Studio Changes
As the project developed, Filoni found inspiration while working on the second season of Ahsoka.
“Because I’ve been writing Ahsoka season 2, things have clicked, and I have a much better idea about where things are going to go,”
he shared in 2024.
“I will say, I have an opening I really like quite a bit, I’m very excited about it for that picture. I’m excited about the potential of just doing it.”
His enthusiasm for the story’s direction was clear, even as the film’s production was put on hold.
Filoni, who previously served as Lucasfilm ’s chief creative officer, now shares the role of co-president with Lynwen Brennan. This leadership change follows Kathleen Kennedy ’s fourteen-year tenure, which began after Disney ’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise in 2012. The new leadership team is steering the studio through a period of transition, with several high-profile projects in the pipeline.
What’s Next for Star Wars on the Big Screen
While Filoni’s crossover film waits in the wings, Lucasfilm is moving forward with other theatrical releases. The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau, is set to hit theaters on May 22. This film continues the story of the popular Disney Plus series, bringing its characters to a wider audience. Following that, Star Wars: Starfighter, an original tale featuring new characters played by Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth, is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027, with Shawn Levy at the helm.
Though the wait for Filoni’s ensemble movie may be longer than fans hoped, the Star Wars universe continues to expand with fresh stories and new faces, keeping anticipation high for what’s to come.
