'Daredevil' worry: Ben Affleck didn't want it resembling The Matrix
Ben Affleck wasn’t exactly at ease filming parts of 2003’s Daredevil — and which scenes had him worried is the part you’ll want to know.
The memory that stuck with Ben Affleck from making Daredevil wasn’t the red suit — it was trading blows with Jennifer Garner. In a new episode of Variety’s “Does Ben Affleck Know His Lines?”, he said the fight scenes with his then–co-star were the highlight, and also the thing that made him most nervous.
“I was kind of like, is this going to look like The Matrix or am I going to look like an idiot?”
Affleck credited Garner for making those sequences sing. Coming off Alias, she was already fluent in screen combat and stunt work.
“The real fun of that movie was getting to work with Jen doing the fights. She so good at that stuff,”
As for the quiz itself, Affleck nailed a line from the 2003 film — “Does every guy have to go through all this just to find your name?” — proving he still remembers his Matt Murdock era.
Almost a reunion
Affleck also revealed he tried to team with Garner again on his film Animals, offering her the role of Abigail. With Matt Damon tied up making The Odyssey , Affleck stepped in to play Abigail’s husband, Mark Kimball. But Garner ultimately passed, a decision he said they came to after talking it through.
“We don't want to do that. You just get baggage,”
Here’s where that casting landed on Animals:
- Ben Affleck — Mark Kimball (Abigail’s husband)
- Kerry Washington — Abigail
- Matt Damon — was unable to join due to filming The Odyssey
- Jennifer Garner — discussed the role of Abigail, then declined
Affleck has said he’d still like to work with Garner again down the line. For Animals, though, Kerry Washington ultimately took the part of Abigail.
