Could Meghan Markle Appear on Best Medicine? Abigail Spencer Weighs In
With Best Medicine closing out season 1, Abigail Spencer is already workshopping season 2—trading Louisa ideas with executive producer Liz Tuccillo while trusting the writers to steer the story.
Best Medicine is about to wrap its first season, and Abigail Spencer already has a vision board brewing for season 2. She plays Louisa, the Port Wenn schoolteacher trying to start a family while her ex, Martin (Josh Charles), wrestles with a never-boring medical practice. Spencer, 44, told Us Weekly she is pitching ideas, but she is also happy to let the writers surprise her.
"It is Liz's show. So to see where they take it, I like to be surprised."
Louisa in season 2: job-hopping, sweatbands, and sticker shock
Spencer says Louisa's baby journey comes with a price tag, which could push her into some very entertaining side gigs around Port Wenn. She floated a few she especially wants to try: Louisa moonlighting all over town to cover expenses, pivoting into a community-center jazzercise instructor, or even leading a walking club. She also likes the idea that Louisa gets deeply, maybe hilariously, invested in caring for her body and trying 'all these different ways' to do it. It is a character move that doubles as comedy fuel.
Keeping it medical (but not too medical)
Asked how Louisa might add to Martin's caseload next year, Spencer did not hesitate: she is good on big new ailments. Mark (Josh Segarra) has already cornered the market on oddball conditions this season — including hemochromatosis — and that is enough chaos for one clinic. What she does love is that Louisa's path to getting pregnant naturally keeps the show grounded in medicine. The more clinical the process gets, the more intimate the story becomes, which — in her words — makes sense if it is going to pull Louisa and Martin back toward each other.
Guest star wish list that could double as a reunion tour
Spencer has thoughts on guest casting too — lots of them. In fact, she joked that everyone she has ever worked with should come visit Port Wenn. Here are the names she actually called out:
- From Suits: Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman, Gina Torres, Gabriel Macht, and Patrick J. Adams. She is realistic about Meghan Markle, but says Meghan would be amazing.
- From Children's Hospital: Lake Bell and Ken Marino.
- Through her costar Annie Potts: Laurie Metcalf and Jean Smart.
- From Burning Love and friends: Michaela Watkins, Nina Dobrev, Michael Chernus, Busy Philipps, and Jen Tullock.
Writers' room vibes and what the finale sets up
Spencer calls executive producer Liz Tuccillo generous and collaborative — open to cast ideas, but still steering the show. And she thinks the season 1 finale sets things up cleanly for a second season, if and when Fox gives the official go-ahead. Translation: they leave plenty of room to see what happens next without slamming the door on anything fans are rooting for.
Best Medicine airs Tuesdays on Fox at 8 p.m. ET.
