Christian Bale’s Method Acting on American Psycho Set Divided Co-Stars
Christian Bale’s intense approach to his role in American Psycho left his co-stars doubting his talent, unaware that his performance would later be celebrated as iconic. Discover what really happened behind the scenes.
Few actors can match the range and dedication that Christian Bale brings to his craft. From blockbuster hits like The Dark Knight trilogy to indie standouts such as The New World, Bale’s career is a testament to his versatility. While many point to his early work in Empire of the Sun as his breakout, it was his chilling portrayal of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho that truly cemented his reputation as a powerhouse performer. Taking on the role of a deranged investment banker, Bale delivered a performance that would become a cultural touchstone, even though the film ’s source material was once considered unadaptable.
American Psycho’s sharp critique of consumerism and violence struck a chord with audiences, and Bale’s character has since become a fixture in internet culture. Over time, his performance has only grown in stature, but the story behind the scenes tells a different tale—one of skepticism and misunderstanding among his fellow cast members.
On-Set Tension and Misunderstandings
In a candid interview, Bale revealed that his co-stars initially doubted his abilities. He recalled a conversation with Josh Lucas, who later admitted that the rest of the cast thought Bale was out of his depth.
“Josh Lucas and I did a film together recently, and he opened my eyes to something that I had been unaware of,” Bale shared. “He informed me that all of the other actors thought that I was the worst actor they’d ever seen. He was telling me they kept looking at me and talking about me, saying, ‘Why did Mary fight for this guy? He’s terrible.’ And it wasn’t until he saw the film that he changed his mind. And I was in the dark completely about that critique.”
Chloë Sevigny, another member of the cast, also struggled with Bale’s intense commitment to his role.
“Working with Christian was pretty hard because I didn’t know this whole Method thing. I was pretty fresh. I hadn’t done that many films before, and that an actor would lose himself to such a degree and was so consumed by the part, I was having a hard time kind of… just wanting to socialise with him, but feeling that he didn’t, and then my ego being like, Does he not like me? Does he think I’m a terrible actress?”
Bale’s Dedication and Its Impact
Despite the doubts and discomfort among the cast, Bale’s total immersion into the character of Bateman paid off. His ability to capture the contradictions of such a complex figure not only elevated the film but also prepared him for even more demanding roles down the line. His reputation for diving deep into his characters became a defining trait of his career.
Over the years, Bale’s approach has mellowed, but his commitment remains. A notorious incident where he lost his temper on set didn’t help his image, but by the time he worked on American Hustle, his colleagues had a different perspective. Bradley Cooper, who starred alongside him, remarked,
“It’s usually hard to meet your heroes. There’s a fear they won’t live up to your hopes. But he far exceeded my expectations. He’s giving and natural and someone who loves to laugh.”
Staying in Character
Bale himself admits to staying in character between takes, but for a surprising reason.
“I tend to stay in character between scenes,” Bale admitted. “to be rather serious on set, but here’s why, and I think people will find it surprising. I’m one of the worst ‘corpses’ on a movie set, which means you can’t keep a straight face. You start to get the giggles, and you can’t stop. I never want to step out of a scene and be objective because as soon as I do, I find it hilarious.”
While his process may have softened with time, Bale’s dedication to his roles continues to define his work, leaving a lasting impression on both his peers and audiences alike.
