Chicago Fire Teases Violet and Novak’s Next Romantic Chapter After the Vasquez Save
Chicago Fire turns a harrowing basement rescue into a smoldering twist: after Vasquez saves their lives, Violet Mikami and Lyla Novak might be ready to spark something new. Inside season 14, episode 18’s game-changing close call.
If you were hoping Chicago Fire would pivot straight into a Violet/Vasquez/Novak love triangle, pump the brakes. After this week’s rescue, the show is steering the drama somewhere else.
Spoilers for season 14, episode 18 (aired Wednesday, April 22) below.
What actually went down
Paramedics Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) and Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) answered a call from a man saying his pregnant wife was in labor. Not exactly. He was actually holding his pregnant tenant hostage and ended up trapping Violet and Novak in a basement bunker while he unraveled.
Firefighter Sal Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente) teamed up with the police and, using what he knew about Violet and Novak, helped track them down before anyone died in that bunker. Classic Chicago Fire: tense setup, messy villain, last-second save.
So… are Violet and Novak about to date Vasquez?
Nope. Both actresses say this episode was less about romance and more about locking in the partnership between the two paramedics. Coming out alive after leaning on each other pushed Violet and Novak to clear the air, realign priorities, and, frankly, stop tiptoeing around the awkward stuff.
"All right, we trust each other, both professionally and personally. Let’s move forward."
Before the kidnapping, Novak told Violet she was hurt that Violet kept her Vasquez hookup under wraps. For context: Violet and Vasquez had a one-night stand earlier this season. Violet then shut it down when she clocked that Novak might actually like the guy. After the rescue, Violet and Novak had an ambulance heart-to-heart and agreed to total honesty, no hedging.
What the rest of the season is setting up
- Violet (Hanako Greensmith): Still figuring out what she wants romantically after the brief Vasquez fling and her short-lived thing with Sam Carver (Jake Lockett), who is now working in Denver. She is not in a commit-now mood. The one relationship she is fully backing is her friendship with Novak. Expect Violet to spend the remaining episodes sorting out what she actually needs and how to be a better friend.
- Novak (Jocelyn Hudon): More backstory coming, plus hints at possible romance. Whether that involves Vasquez is very much TBD. For what it’s worth, earlier this season she told Vasquez that the fact he slept with Violet makes him a non-starter.
- Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente): The show is going to peel back more layers. He is a private guy, and viewers will be spending a chunk of the rest of the season trying to understand what makes him tick. Translation: expect more focus on him, even if the romantic angle stays murky.
Bottom line: the episode didn’t light a match under a new romance. It doubled down on Violet and Novak as partners first, maybe-more-later second. And honestly, that feels like the smarter play right now.
Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
