Chelsea Handler honored Rob Reiner with a moving speech at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, reflecting on his kindness and the legacy he leaves behind in Hollywood after his and his wife's tragic passing.

During the 2026 Critics Choice Awards, Chelsea Handler took a poignant moment to honor Rob Reiner, the acclaimed director and beloved figure in the entertainment world. Handler, who hosted the ceremony on January 4, paused the festivities to reflect on Reiner’s character and the profound loss felt throughout Hollywood following the deaths of Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in December 2025.

Authorities reported that Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on December 14, both having suffered fatal sharp force injuries. Their son, Nick Reiner, now faces charges related to their deaths. The tragedy cast a shadow over the awards season, making Handler’s tribute all the more significant as the industry gathered to celebrate its achievements.

Remembering a Hollywood Icon

Handler began her tribute by acknowledging the deep respect and affection so many held for Reiner.

“Everyone in this room knows that the nicest guy in Hollywood was Rob Reiner,”

she said, her voice steady but emotional. She described how Reiner’s warmth made every encounter feel like reconnecting with an old friend.

“Anyone who ever spent time with Rob Reiner knows that the minute you met him, he felt like an old friend when you were in a conversation with him.”

Handler went on to recall Reiner’s genuine curiosity and humor, noting how he engaged people in conversations about everything from politics to movies to the latest trends. She emphasized that his presence was always felt, and his focus never wavered, no matter the topic.

Legacy of Decency and Compassion

While Handler highlighted Reiner’s many talents and achievements, she made it clear that his and Michele’s legacy would be defined by their unwavering decency.

“Rob and Michele were tireless in their efforts to so many important causes, all stemming from one basic idea: decency, and that we should all look out for each other,”

Handler shared with the audience. She urged everyone present to remember and carry forward the values the couple embodied.

“I think we can all agree that we definitely need more of that,”

she added, encouraging the room to use the evening as a reminder of the compassion and integrity the Reiners stood for.
