Carelessness cost John Cena acting opportunities: “I got ran out of the movie business”
John Cena is owning up to a Hollywood rookie mistake from his early days — and it’s not the misstep you might expect.
While promoting an upcoming project, John Cena told NBC’s 3rd Hour of TODAY that he almost derailed his movie career in the late 2000s because he didn’t care enough about the work. The former WWE champ said his focus stayed in the ring even as he started taking film roles, and that mindset nearly pushed him out of Hollywood.
“Those early projects — truth be told — I didn’t have my heart into,” he said.
Cena recalled being a “young 20-something” addicted to the adrenaline of live crowds and admitted he didn’t yet understand how filmmaking works. He described sets as “super patient and slow” and said he lacked the “wisdom” to appreciate the process at the time.
“As a young 20-something, God, traveling the world, being out in front of tens of thousands of people every night going nuts and then doing it night after night, that’s where I wanted to be, and that’s where I felt comfortable and fluent,” he said.
From WWE to movie sets
Cena first stepped into features with The Marine in 2006, but he says his heart was still back on the road with WWE. He credits experience—and some hard lessons—for changing his approach. These days, he says he shows up fully engaged and grateful for each role.

The rap kid who got mocked
On the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast, Cena also opened up about growing up obsessed with rap and getting bullied for how he looked before he filled out his now-familiar frame. That passion eventually became part of his persona—and his music.
He released his rap album You Can’t See Me on May 10, 2005.
