Curious what Sebastian Stan really thinks about Bucky Barnes’ arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — he just said it.

On Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sebastian Stan said he’s proud of how Bucky Barnes has grown over the years — but he doesn’t think the journey is over yet.

“I never have any idea about what it is that they want to do, but I still feel that there’s something about this character that hasn’t totally yet been completed, and I think they know it.”

By “they,” Stan was referring to Marvel Studios, and he hinted that the people in charge are aware there’s more to explore with Bucky. He even joked that maybe that next chapter is already baked into an upcoming film.

Marvel secrecy kicks in

Separately, speaking to French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, Stan said Marvel kept things so tight on Avengers: Doomsday that he never had a full screenplay in hand.

“We didn’t have a script. We were simply filming scattered scenes.”

That cloak-and-dagger approach wasn’t limited to Stan. Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) and David Harbour (Red Guardian) have also said they weren’t given the entire script, a familiar tactic for the studio when it wants to lock down plot reveals.

Why Bucky still matters

First introduced in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky Barnes has one of the MCU ’s toughest backstories — brainwashed by Hydra, weaponized as the Winter Soldier, and slowly reclaiming himself with help from Steve Rogers and Wakanda. His most recent deep dive came in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ in 2021, where Bucky confronted his past and tried to make amends.

If you’re catching up, here are Bucky’s key MCU stops to date:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021, Disney+)

As for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel is keeping Bucky’s fate under wraps. What’s clear is that Stan believes there’s unfinished business for the character — and he’s already shot scenes for the movie without ever seeing a full script.
