Hollywood is mounting a defense of Tom Cruise’s latest cinematic gamble, showering Digger with praise—and you’ll want to see who’s rushing in.

On Letterboxd this week, Anne Hathaway planted a flag for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s black comedy Digger, slapping a perfect 10/10 on it and urging people to see it themselves.

“smart and trippy and aggressive and funny and ambitious”

Her post landed as the movie fights through bruising early numbers — just $20 million worldwide since its October 2, 2026 release against a reported $160–$180 million budget — plus a 51% Rotten Tomatoes score and a C+ CinemaScore.

Big names speak up

Hathaway isn’t the only one going to bat for the film ’s swing-for-the-fences approach. Other actors and filmmakers have publicly backed its risk-taking streak:

  • Jane Fonda — praised the movie’s creative risk-taking
  • Mandy Patinkin — added his support for its ambition
  • Glen Powell — amplified the case for seeing it in theaters
  • Guillermo del Toro — pushed back at media pile-ons and encouraged audiences to wait for streaming
  • Alfonso Cuarón — shared old dismissive reviews of Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Metropolis to suggest history could judge Digger more kindly

The show of support comes as Tom Cruise and Iñárritu’s film tries to shift the conversation from grosses to intent, with high-profile voices arguing the work deserves to be evaluated on its own terms.

What’s next

If you’re into big, auteur-driven gambles, there are more on the way — some with equally eye-watering budgets:

  • The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth (David Fincher) — reportedly around $200 million, drawn from a Quentin Tarantino screenplay and set in a dark, character-focused 1977 Los Angeles
  • The Possession (Parker Finn) — a psychological horror swing with a planned June 2027 release
  • Dune: Part Three (Denis Villeneuve ) — a grand sci-fi finale with established audience goodwill behind the franchise

Digger is in theaters now; The Possession is currently set for June 2027.
