Heading back to an acclaimed role — this time for the big screen — Andrew Scott has a reunion you might not expect.

The new feature version of Sea Wall will be built out of a limited Off-Broadway run: cameras will capture Andrew Scott performing Simon Stephens’ one-man play across 19 shows at Studio Seaview in New York, with the movie weaving in footage of the audience, backstage and other behind-the-scenes moments.

Nineteen performances will be filmed Oct. 16–30 at Studio Seaview in New York.

Tina Satter, the director of Is This a Room, is set to helm the adaptation. The team is rounding out the live capture like a concert film crossed with an intimate stage piece, aiming to preserve the jump from easy humor to gut-punch tragedy that made the monologue a word-of-mouth legend.

  • Director — Tina Satter
  • Director of photography — Paul Yee
  • Sound design — Ben Williams
  • Lighting design — Isabella Byrd
  • Production design advisor — Parker Lutz

From page to stage to screen

Stephens wrote Sea Wall specifically for Scott in 2008. He plays Alex, a soft-spoken photographer whose story pivots from breezy, conversational charm to a devastating reckoning after an unthinkable family tragedy. Scott first brought the piece to screen in a 2012 filmed version, then returned to it for a 2018 revival at London’s Old Vic.

Why now

The Sea Wall capture lands as Scott’s fall heats up: Variety notes the announcement arrives amid awards buzz for his new film Elsinore, which internationally premiered at Telluride, is slated to open the BFI London Film Festival and has screened at Toronto. In the U.S., Focus Features plans to release Elsinore in theaters on November 20, 2026 .

Filming for Sea Wall runs October 16–30 at Studio Seaview in New York.
