Ben Affleck’s harsh Hollywood lesson: “People Really Aren’t Your Friends”
Ben Affleck has pinpointed the exact moment he knew he was truly in Hollywood — and it’s not the first thing you’d guess.
On a recent stop by New Heights, Ben Affleck told host Jason Kelce that his real “welcome to Hollywood ” moment didn’t come with an award or a big premiere — it hit when the phone stopped ringing. After racing through back-to-back projects when he was young, he said there was a stretch when a few movies didn’t land and suddenly he couldn’t get hired at all.
That’s when he noticed who stuck around. Affleck said the studio heads and industry figures he’d once considered friends began dodging him and not returning calls, a jolt that reshaped how he views the business.
“And I realized, oh, okay. Like that was the Hollywood moment where I was like, these people are really aren’t your friends,”
He added that the attention was often transactional — people wanting proximity to success. The takeaway for him now is to keep perspective no matter which way the wind’s blowing.
“Don’t get overinflated, and don’t get yourself too attached to how the world treats you. One day it treats you one way, and the next day another, you have to keep an even keel,”
Work vs. life now
That hard lesson shows up in how he chooses jobs today. In a recent GQ conversation, Affleck said even a dream call might not move him if it upends the life he’s built — including something as high-profile as Christopher Nolan ’s planned take on The Odyssey .
“There’s a cost to doing that,”
Affleck said films can give you purpose and drive, but making them the whole point can mean missing what matters outside of Hollywood. He admitted turning down a Nolan movie would be tough, yet he’s “comfortable” with that possibility — and said he could pass on a Martin Scorsese film, too, if taking it meant compromising the life he wants.
