Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 release date: Netflix finale may land sooner than you'd expect
Netflix's live-action Avatar just left fans on the cruelest cliffhanger imaginable — Aang struck by Azula's lightning while in the Avatar State, Zuko back on the wrong side. The good news? The wait for the final season should be far shorter than the last one. Here's where things stand.
When does season 3 come out?
No official date yet — but the smart money is on 2027, possibly as early as spring or summer. Season 3 was filmed back-to-back with season 2, and production officially wrapped on November 10, 2025. Season 2 needed roughly 15 months of post-production after its own wrap; apply that same math to season 3 and you land somewhere between early 2027 and September 2027.
Compare that to the last gap: 2 years and 4 months between seasons 1 and 2. This one could be nearly half that.
Why the wait is shorter this time
Netflix renewed the show for seasons 2 and 3 simultaneously back in March 2024, which let production shoot both in one continuous run — season 3 started filming on May 20, 2025, partly in Iceland, and finished less than six months later. Season 2 premiered on June 25, 2026, with season 3's effects work already deep underway. All that's left is the (admittedly massive) VFX job.
What will season 3 cover?
The final season adapts Book Three: Fire — Aang learning firebending, the invasion of the Fire Nation, and the showdown with Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim) as Sozin's Comet arrives. Star Gordon Cormier teased the stakes to Netflix Tudum in June 2026:
"Maybe hope gets crushed, maybe hope succeeds. That's what makes Season 3 so exciting."
New cast additions include Jon Jon Briones as swordmaster Piandao, Tantoo Cardinal as the dark waterbender Hama, Terry Chen as Jeong Jeong, and Dolly De Leon as Azula's twin advisers Lo and Li.
Could Netflix split it into two parts?
It's possible — Netflix did exactly that with Stranger Things and Bridgerton — but nothing has been announced. What is confirmed: season 3 is the end. Netflix has said the series will conclude with the four nations uniting to bring The Legend of Aang to its proper close.
For the record: season 2 landed with a middling 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, so the finale has something to prove.
At least we won't be waiting two and a half years to find out if it does.
