At 11, Dakota Fanning got Kurt Russell’s advice — and it stuck
Dakota Fanning says a piece of advice from Kurt Russell when she was 11 has stuck with her ever since — and she still lives by it.
On the set of the 2005 horse-racing drama Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story, 11-year-old Dakota Fanning says her on-screen dad, Kurt Russell, pulled her aside with a reality check about life after wrap.
“I want you to understand it 's not going to be this way ever again,”
Fanning shared the memory on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, explaining that Russell’s talk came after they’d gotten especially close while filming.
“We had just developed this really special bond, he’s just the greatest,”
As Fanning recalled it, Russell was preparing her for the way movie families can scatter once production ends — they might not see each other for years, but that doesn’t erase what they built on set. He played her father in Dreamer, and the advice stuck.
Fanning grew up working alongside veteran stars, bouncing from set to set and collecting mentors along the way, including:
- Sean Penn
- Denzel Washington
- Tom Cruise
What she’s up to now
Two decades later, Fanning is stacking new milestones. In 2026, she earned an Emmy nomination for her supporting role in All Her Fault and also drew recognition as a producer on Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
She’s kept busy on both sides of the Atlantic too, filming an upcoming Apple thriller in Europe this year.
