‘Apocalypse Z’ renewed as Amazon exec challenges U.S. monopoly on zombie horror

The new Spanish zombie chapter Apocalypse Z: New World is timed for a Halloween rollout under Amazon ’s banner, and it doesn’t look anything like the usual stateside apocalypse. The action rips through Galicia and the Canary Islands, built around a “living infected” concept that puts speed and raw panic front and center.

Instead of shambling corpses, the franchise ’s fictional TSJ Virus keeps its hosts alive and feral. Victims run, climb and swarm, turning every stairwell and alley into a sprint-for-your-life set piece.

What sets it apart

• Locations: Spain’s Galicia and the Canary Islands stand in for the end of the world, not a familiar U.S. cityscape.
• Everyman lead: Manel is a grieving lawyer, not a soldier or survivalist superhero.
• Unexpected heart: his Persian cat, Lúculo, becomes an unlikely emotional anchor amid the chaos.
• Texture: practical action and European backdrops give the set pieces a more grounded feel.

Amazon laid out why it’s leaning into this flavor of horror during a featured panel at the Iberseries & Platino Industria event in Madrid, arguing that Spanish creators shouldn’t cede big-scale genre to Hollywood.

“Well, first of all, because horror is a Spanish genre, and you need to democratize that as well, and you need to tell the bosses that it can be done,” Morganti said.

The sequel follows Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End, which became one of Prime Video ’s top non-English titles—proof that a Spanish-language zombie story can travel. It also arrives from a country with deep horror roots (Spain’s Fantaterror tradition looms large), which is exactly the lane Amazon says it wants to widen.

Alongside the movie push, Amazon has renewed Apocalypse Z, keeping the franchise in active play. Apocalypse Z: New World lands just in time for Halloween.
