Amazon Pulls AI-Generated English Dubs From Popular Anime Titles
Amazon has removed AI-generated English dubs from the anime series Banana Fish, Pet, and the movie No Game, No Life Zero following criticism, with studios stating the dubs were not approved.
Amazon has taken down AI- created English audio tracks from several well-known anime series and films, including Banana Fish, Pet, and No Game, No Life Zero. Earlier this week, viewers noticed a new 'English [AI beta]' option in the audio settings for these titles, which featured voices produced entirely by artificial intelligence. As of December 1, these AI dubs are no longer available on Prime Video, and there is currently no English audio option for these shows and movies. However, a Latin American Spanish AI dub for The Vinland Saga is still accessible.
Studios Respond to Unapproved AI Dubs
Anime production companies Aniplex, Kadokawa, and Sentai Filmworks addressed the situation after being contacted for comment. Kadokawa made it clear that they had not authorized any AI-generated English dub, stating,
no AI dub was approved "in any form,"
while Sentai Filmworks explained they were
"not aware in advance"
of the AI dub and are now looking into the issue with Amazon.
Viewer Backlash and Industry Concerns
The sudden appearance of AI voiceovers sparked immediate backlash from fans and industry professionals alike. Many viewers expressed frustration over the use of synthetic voices, arguing that it undermines the work of human voice actors and affects the overall quality of the viewing experience. The lack of transparency about the addition of these AI dubs only fueled the criticism.
Industry insiders have raised concerns about the potential impact of AI-generated performances on the future of dubbing and localization. The controversy has highlighted the importance of clear communication and approval processes between streaming platforms and content creators, especially when it comes to new technology that could disrupt established practices.
Prime Video's Next Steps Remain Unclear
With the removal of the AI English dubs, Prime Video subscribers are left without an English audio option for Banana Fish, Pet, and No Game, No Life Zero. It remains to be seen whether Amazon will restore traditional English dubs or introduce other solutions in response to the feedback from both viewers and studios. For now, the incident has sparked a broader conversation about the role of artificial intelligence in entertainment and the need for collaboration between streaming services and rights holders.
