Episode 5 of Lanterns doesn’t bring him on screen, but it blows the case wide open with his name. In a tense exchange between John Stewart and Zoe, we learn the Guardians built the Manhunters to police the universe, then abandoned them when their justice turned brutal — and Zoe is the last one left. Decades ago, the Green Lantern who found her, Abin Sur, smuggled her to Earth to hide her from the Guardians and give her a fresh start. Afraid he’d reverse course, Zoe killed him — a revelation that locks his death into the center of the Rushville mystery.

Long before this show, Abin Sur was a cornerstone of Green Lantern lore. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, he debuted in Showcase #22 (1959) as the ring-bearer who preceded Hal Jordan. A native of Ungara and the Lantern assigned to Sector 2814, Abin crash-landed on Earth after being mortally wounded and used his power ring to find a worthy successor. The ring chose Hal Jordan for his willpower and fearlessness, making him the Corps’ first human recruit.

What it changes for the show
On Lanterns, Abin isn’t just a prologue to Hal — he’s the thread connecting the Corps’ hidden past to the present-day tragedy in Rushville. His choice to hide Zoe points to a fraught break with the Guardians over their discarded creations, and his death stops being a distant origin beat and becomes the key to understanding why the past keeps crashing into the present.
There’s also the shadow of Sinestro. In the comics, Abin was Sinestro’s mentor and friend before Sinestro turned into one of the Corps’ greatest threats, a bond that DC has mined for years — including stories where Hal and Sinestro dig into secrets tied to Abin. With Episode 5 planting Abin inside the Manhunter mystery, that history suddenly feels a lot closer to the action on the show.
However you’ve met him — in the 2011 movie, in Showcase #22, or now through Zoe’s confession — Abin Sur’s legacy is no longer background. Episode 5 confirms he encountered Zoe decades earlier, brought her to Earth, and paid for it with his life.
