31 Years Ago, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Capped Its Season With a Game-Changing Ranger Upgrade
He brought the party to every fight—and the grit when it mattered. Across three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Zack’s switch-flip heroics proved he was far more than the team’s life of the party.
Every Ranger got a turn in the spotlight on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but Zack’s big moment came with a twist: he briefly borrowed the Green Ranger’s signature armor and used it to save the day. Yes, really. It’s one of those fun, very-90s power-sharing moves the show did once in a while, and it absolutely rules.
The finale that leveled up Zack (fast)
Season 1’s finale, episode 60, 'An Oyster Stew,' puts Zack front and center both as a person and as a Ranger. The villain of the week is the Oysterizer, a clammy creep whose acid gel is no joke. Most of Angel Grove gets frozen in a suspended animation state, leaving Zack and Tommy to handle the mess on their own.
It does not go well at first. Zack takes a direct hit from the Oysterizer’s acid. To keep him on his feet, Tommy transfers the Dragon Shield to Zack, which both heals him and gives him a shot of extra power. Then the tide turns again: Oysterizer lands a clean hit on Tommy, and suddenly it’s on Zack to finish the fight while wearing the shield.
He does exactly that. Zack uses the borrowed boost to blast the Oysterizer off a cliff and into the water below, saving Tommy in the process. The upgrade is short-lived, but it’s a great look for Zack and one of those episodes fans still point to when they talk about his underrated hero moments.
The Dragon Shield is usually Tommy’s thing… usually
The Dragon Shield comes standard with the Green Ranger’s suit and powers, so it’s mostly tied to Tommy. But on rare occasions he shared it. Across Mighty Morphin, that handoff basically happened twice:
- Jason’s power-up: After Tommy lost his Green Ranger powers, he handed Jason the Power Coin, the Dragon Shield, and the Dragon Dagger. Jason got an immediate stat bump, and with the Dagger in play the team could still summon the Dragonzord even with Tommy benched.
- Zack’s clutch assist: In 'An Oyster Stew,' Tommy passes the Dragon Shield to Zack mid-battle to heal him and juice his energy. Oysterizer nails Tommy right after, leaving Zack to close things out while rocking the shield.
It’s a small piece of franchise lore, but it hits that sweet spot where character spotlight meets cool suit remix. Zack’s always been the guy who can dance through a fight, then flip a switch when things get serious. This episode just let him do it with an extra layer of gold.
