Yahya Abdul-Mateen II finally addresses Marvel's Wonder Man cancellation
Following Wonder Man’s unexpected cancellation, Yahya Abdul‑Mateen II shared a message — opting for grace and optimism rather than grievance.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II addressed the end of Wonder Man directly to fans, posting on Instagram that he’s choosing to stay positive and focus on the show’s impact. In his note, he emphasized the messages he’s received from viewers and the encouragement they took from Simon Williams’ story.
“That’s life, right? Everything will shake out.”
“I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day. So, thinking of you all today.”
Abdul-Mateen’s post follows the surprise cancellation of the Marvel series despite an earlier Season 2 order. He framed the run as a “real, massive success” and thanked the audience for meeting him with support in person and online.
The show premiered in January on Disney+ and earned a strong critical reception, including a 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the comedy followed Simon Williams, a struggling actor juggling the chaos of everyday gigs with the complication of being superpowered. Ben Kingsley returned as Trevor Slattery, forming one of the season’s warmest pairings opposite Abdul-Mateen’s Simon.
Surprise cameos
Part of the fun was spotting familiar faces who popped in across the season:
- Ashley Greene — cameo in Episode 1
- Josh Gad — as himself in Episode 4
- Mario Lopez — guest appearance
- Joe Pantoliano — guest appearance
Marvel has canceled the show and is not moving forward with the announced second season. While Wonder Man won’t return on Disney+, the character could still surface elsewhere in the MCU; no additional appearances for Simon Williams have been announced.
